Before there were champions...
Before there were stadiums...
Before millions gathered to watch machines tear across the desert at impossible speeds...
There was simply the journey.
The world of K'ta'jah is defined by extremes. A single great continent, known as the Scorch Belt, wraps around the planet's equator like a band of rust-colored stone. To the north lies the Sea of K'ta. To the south, the vast Jah Ocean. Frozen polar caps bookend a world that turns beneath the crimson light of an aging red giant star.
For centuries, life in the Scorch Belt has revolved around movement.
The desert between cities is beautiful, unforgiving, and often deadly. Most settlements were founded in valleys where even a slight drop in temperature allowed people to survive. Between them stretched hundreds of kilometers of scorching sand, jagged rock, violent dust storms, and dangers that made standing still every bit as risky as pressing forward.
To cross that wilderness, travelers relied on remarkable single-pilot machines known simply as Slicers.
Built for speed rather than comfort, Slicers hauled medicine, food, machinery, and passengers between the scattered cities of the Belt. Every successful run meant another settlement remained connected to the rest of civilization.
It didn't take long before one pilot asked another a simple question.
"Think you can beat me there?"
Friendly wagers became traditions. Traditions became rivalries.
Soon, pilots were arriving with empty cargo trailers because the prize money for winning was worth more than the freight they had abandoned. Every unnecessary kilogram was stripped away. Engines grew louder. Hulls became lighter. Routes that had once been measured in survival were now measured in seconds.
Somewhere along the way, the merchants became racers.
Teams formed around the fastest pilots. Engineers chased impossible speeds. Mechanics rebuilt shattered machines overnight. Sponsors discovered that victory sold products better than any advertisement ever could.
As the races grew larger, so did the risks.
The ancient transport routes became increasingly dangerous, filled with competitors willing to risk everything for another victory. Eventually, a governing body known simply as The League stepped in.
Rather than eliminate racing, The League embraced it.
Massive racing complexes rose from the desert floor, each one surrounding a purpose-built course where crews could push their machines beyond reason without threatening the lifelines that connected the cities of the Scorch Belt. Rules were written. Safety standards were established. Championships were organized.
The crews followed those rules...
...at least the ones they couldn't get away with breaking.
Today, Sand Slicer racing is the greatest spectacle on K'ta'jah.
When a League event arrives, entire cities transform. Merchants flood the streets. Wagers change hands by the thousands. Fans proudly wear the colors of their favorite crews. For several days, racing becomes more than entertainment—it becomes the center of life itself.
Then, as quickly as it began, it ends.
The grandstands empty.
The crowds disappear.
The desert grows quiet once again.
What remains is a battlefield of twisted hulls, shattered engines, broken vent assemblies, and enough scrap metal to build a dozen new machines.
The spectators see wreckage.
The crews see tomorrow's race.
And that is when the FIXRs go to work.
Small, relentless salvage robots swarm across the abandoned track, recovering every part they can find before rivals claim it first. Every usable engine is another chance to compete. Every damaged hull can become tomorrow's victory. Even illegal contraband has a habit of finding its way into the right hands.
Because on K'ta'jah, a racer's life doesn't stop at the finish line.
Somewhere beyond the cheering crowds, while the last fans are making their way home, dozens of tiny machines are already combing through the wreckage.
But that's a story for another day.
